Generations

Many of our projects and methodologies explore how large-scale events like recessions and pandemics lead to major cultural shifts, and can reshape our relationship to, say, femininity or beauty. Such shifts can create mindsets that carry on through an entire generational cohort. Many of the phenomena we observe transcend demographics, thus requiring us to take other variables into account, such as discourse, taste, and virtual communities.

Eliot Salandy Brown takes us into the lives of Baby Boomers to understand what makes their lives interesting, exciting and meaningful. This brief glimpse into the rich and vibrant lives of Baby Boomers in the UK hints at changing conceptions of age, vitality, sociality, luxury, and meaning in the second half of life.

What is a generation, anyway? And how do companies successfully study and understand cultural signifiers in order to capture the spirit of a generation? Eliot Salandy Brown and Sandra Cariglio discuss what Greta Thunberg's followers teach us about Gen Z, why the Ford Mustang has staying power through generations, and how we might interpret differences about generational identity across cultures.
