Mandag Morgen: Sick Leave Now A Bigger Problem Than Unemployment

In a recent report, it was found that Danes’ sick leave amounts to the equivalent of 150,000 full-time jobs. The problem has become so extensive that it is taking its toll on the welfare system, hurting companies’ bottom line and adding to the problem of labor shortage. However, a project by ReD Associates for the municipality of Copenhagen has found that it is possible to reduce sick leave by as much as 60 percent. The consultancy company found that overly complicated rules, frequent restructuring of the workplace and a reluctance to engage with the sick were the main culprits responsible for the high rate of sick leave.
